Rail commuters will be able to stay connected to the Internet on their mobile devices while on the train when Wi-Fi is rolled out at 28 MRT station platforms from the middle of this year. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced this trial on Wednesday.
These stations comprise all the North-East Line stations and 12 other major stations with high commuter usage. They are Jurong East, Raffles Place, City Hall, Dhoby Ghaut, Bishan, Serangoon, Buona Vista, Outram Park, Paya Lebar, Orchard, Choa Chu Kang and HarbourFront MRT stations. Tenders for the implementation of the Wi-Fi connection, Wireless@SG, will be called on Wednesday.
"LTA will monitor the trial for two years before deciding if the service will be extended to other MRT stations," the authority added in the statement.
Wireless@SG is a wireless broadband initiative by the Infocomm Authority of Singapore and will allow users to enjoy free wireless broadband access with speeds of up to 2Mbps. This initiative, which is part of the Land Transport Master Plan, aims to provide better service on the public transport network by enabling commuters to stay connected wirelessly as they wait for trains.
