SINGAPORE: Two brothers have been charged with hacking offences. They were initially arrested last month in connection with the alleged hacking of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) website.

27-year-old Mohammad Azhar Tahir faces 10 counts, including that of allegedly modifying contents of the PMO website.

His brother, 21-year-old Mohammad Asyiq Tahir, faces six charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act.

The two were said to have also hacked into online accounts belonging to three individuals.

Bail has been set at S$10,000 for each of the accused. Their cases will be mentioned again on 6 January.

Mohammad Azhar allegedly modified the contents of the PMO website's server on 7 November.

He is said to have impaired the server's search function and caused it to display an image of a mask and wordings.

Mohammad Azhar also faces other charges - including unauthorised access to a computer to gain Internet usage, hacking into the online accounts of one individual and modifying the contents on Twitter and Instagram.

Mohammad Asyiq is accused of illegally accessing a computer to get Internet service, hacking into an individual's YouTube account to upload a video titled "Anonymous Retaliating and gives Warning", and illegally accessing Gmail, Hotmail, Blogspot and Facebook accounts of others.

The alleged offences are committed over several days in November.

Several arrests have been made recently in relation to the alleged hacking of websites. In November, three other Singaporeans were accused of compromising websites belonging to the Ang Mo Kio Town Council as well as the Istana.

The first to face charges is 35-year-old James Raj Arokiasamy, who allegedly goes by the moniker "The Messiah".

Charged in mid-November, he is accused of compromising the Ang Mo Kio Town Council website on 28 October from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Singaporean also faces four drug charges and is currently in remand to help with investigations.

On Thursday, James Raj came under the spotlight again.

Police said information on 647 of Standard Chartered's private banking clients were found in a laptop belonging to him.

Some two weeks later, businessman Delson Moo and student Melvin Teo were charged with hacking an Istana webpage on 8 November.

Authorities have said the hacking of the PMO and Istana websites were separate acts and not linked to James Raj. - CNA/ac/xq

SINGAPORE - Two brothers, initially arrested over the hacking of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) website, now face a total of 16 cybercrime charges between them.

The prosecution last Friday tendered 10 charges in court against Mohammad Azhar Tahir, 27. They include the unauthorised modification of content on the PMO site, illegally accessing a neighbour's wireless Internet service, and hacking into various social media and e-mail accounts of Ah Boys To Men actor Ridhwan Azman.

The younger brother, Mohammad Asyiq Tahir, 21, faces six similar charges, including one for hacking into the Facebook page of his former girlfriend Woo Huijing, on Nov 4.

Azhar, who is unemployed, is accused of hacking into the PMO site on Nov 7, causing it to show an image of a mask and two phrases over what the webpage would normally display. One of those phrases had references to the Anonymous hacktivist group.

The two brothers are also accused of separately hacking into seven different social media and e-mail accounts belonging to Mr Ridhwan on Nov 5.

Last Friday, the 20-year-old entertainer said Asyiq was the former boyfriend of Ms Woo, 19, before he started seeing her.

Asyiq is said to have hacked into the actor's Hotmail, Gmail and Blogspot accounts, and uploaded a video purportedly from the Anonymous group to Mr Ridhwan's YouTube page.

The brothers were released on $10,000 bail last Friday with their passports impounded. Their case will be heard again on Jan 6.

The police had said the duo are not connected to James Raj Arokiasamy, the alleged hacker behind "The Messiah" pseudonym.

The 35-year-old is now said to be linked to the theft of data belonging to Standard Chartered Bank's clients, after the files were found in a laptop seized from him when he was arrested.

SINGAPORE - A jobless man admitted on Tuesday to a raft of charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act, most of which involved the entering of unauthorised script into the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) website on Nov 7 last year.

Abusing a Google search box embedded on the page, Mohammad Azhar Tahir, 27, created script which would generate an image referencing international hacktivist group Anonymous, when triggered.

Then on various social media websites, he posted a link containing the script, which superimposes a Guy Fawkes mask and a sentence reading "It's great to be Singaporean today" over what the site's search page would normally display.

Internet users clicking the link would form the impression that the PMO website had been defaced though data on its server had not actually been altered, leading to widespread public speculation and concern, the prosecution said.

SINGAPORE - Undeterred by the Government's warning that it would deal with those who threaten to attack Singapore's cyber infrastructure, a hacking enthusiast tested his skills on the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) website.

Mohammad Azhar Tahir, 28, was sentenced to two months' jail on Monday for entering unauthorised computer code into the site on Nov 7 last year.

But the jobless man's total term comes to six months, after including punishment for related computer misuse offences. These included mooching off a neighbour's wireless Internet service, and modifying social media and e-mail accounts that belonged to Ah Boys To Men actor Muhammad Ridhwan Azman, 21.

Mohammad Azhar had targeted the PMO website after hearing about the warning, which had been issued by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. This came after someone claiming links with international "hacktivist" group Anonymous threatened to hit out at Singapore's computer networks.

Instead of proper search terms, Mohammad Azhar entered HTML code into a Google bar embedded in the PMO site. This resulted in a modified page that referenced Anonymous.

Internet users who clicked on a link containing script for the page, which he posted on various social media websites, would see a Guy Fawkes mask and two messages instead of what the search results page would normally display. The messages were: "It's great to be Singaporean today" and "ANONYMOUS SG WAS HERE BIATCH".

Mohammad Azhar had pleaded guilty on Nov 11 to seven of 59 charges.

He committed the PMO site intrusions with a technique known as cross-site scripting (XSS) - one of various methods he had picked up over several years out of interest.

His brother, Mohammad Asyiq Tahir, 22, was also dealt with on Monday for computer misuse. The national serviceman was placed on 18 months' probation after pleading guilty to five of 11 offences. These largely involved tampering with Mr Muhammad Ridhwan's email and social media accounts. None concerned the PMO website server.

For each of two counts of securing unauthorised access to the website server, Mohammad Azhar could have been jailed for up to three years and fined up to $10,000.
