Fans of late Canto-pop queen Anita Mui Yim-fong are hoping to exhibit hundreds of her costumes, jewellery and personal items that they painstakingly collected over the years, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her passing in December. But a venue has yet to be found.

The issue came to light on Mui's birthday yesterday, amid preparations for an auction tomorrow that will see more than 400 of her personal items go under the hammer. Mui would have turned 50 yesterday. She died of cervical cancer on December 30, 2003.

"We have collected a lot of Mui's personal items and costumes, accompanied with pictures," said Anita Mui International Fan Club chairwoman Selina So. "We hope to organise a charity exhibition in December to commemorate our idol, but the venue is a problem. A lot of venues like City Hall were fully booked, and shopping malls don't seem interested."

So said fans had discussed what to bid for at tomorrow's auction, held by auctioneer Paidegao. Items included a wooden bed frame and furniture set; sets of accessories such as designer sunglasses, jewellery and clothes; and collections of Mui's photos and recordings. Each set had a pre-sale estimate of HK$500, with some estimated to fetch about HK$1,000.

The sale also revealed the late Canto-pop singer as a Manchester United fan. Sets of the English football club's collectibles - including jerseys and a football autographed by David Beckham - were among the items on offer.

"There are many small items, so perhaps a few people will group together to bid and we'll discuss what to do later," said So.

The items for sale were housed in Mui's home in Shouson Hill, which was in August sold to Sun Hung Kai Properties for HK$147 million. It was reported that Mui acquired the property for HK$20 million in 1994, and she lived there until her death nine years later. The sales of the property and her personal items were reportedly to finance the decade-long lawsuits between Mui's mother Tam Mei-kam and the star's estate administrator HSBC International Trust.

Fans yesterday paid tribute to Mui at a Buddhist temple in Kowloon Tong and a dinner that showcased two of her costumes.
