Both sides have been in prolific form this summer, and Al Hain-Cole expects Jens Keller's more serious approach to the match to ensure plenty of goals when they meet in Austria

After securing an 8-0 win over Spanish lower division side Llagostera in their last pre-season game, Southampton head to Austria for a sterner test against Schalke on Wednesday.

The Saints ran out 7-2 winners when these sides last met back in a pre-season friendly back in 1980, and Paddy Power are offering odds of 11/4 (3.75) on them coming out on top 33 years on.

However, last season’s Champions League quarter-finalists have established themselves among the European elite in recent years and are 4/5 (1.80) favourites to emerge victorious this evening.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men drew more games than anyone but Stoke in last season’s Premier League, and you can get odds of 12/5 (3.40) on the sides cancelling each other out in Villach/Lind.

Jens Keller’s men have been in prolific form over the summer, scoring 22 goals in just seven exhibition games to give their fans plenty of optimism for the upcoming campaign.

Considering their English opposition’s 10-goal haul over the past two matches, it seems that any fans making the trip to the Austrian countryside will be rewarded with an entertaining encounter, with no shortage of goalmouth action.

A bet on over 2.5 goals would have paid out in eight of these teams’ nine pre-season fixtures so far, and should be particularly safe when they come face-to-face, meaning odds of 8/13 (1.62) are certainly not to be missed tonight.

In fact, die Konigsblauen have seen at least four goals scored in five of their last six games, so it is well worth taking up the 13/8 (2.63) price on over 3.5 going in once again.

While Southampton’s league season does not kick off for around a month, Schalke have less than two weeks before their first competitive fixture, so should be taking this game more seriously than their opponents.

While Pochettino is likely to be ringing the changes in order to give as many players as possible a run-out, Keller should be fielding closer to his strongest lineup, and the resulting mismatch should only spell more goals.
