The manouver is call circling approach. Most airports use straight in approach. Closer home the only airport to use circling approach is tioman airport because of terrain restriction. Need to go for special check flights with instructors before a pilot is allow to land there.

after landing safely at night the first time i arrived at kai tak, i bukkaked the beautiful woman sitting right next to me. it was the most thrilling foreplay in any landing. the other was landing among clouds on quito high up in the andes surrounded by volcanoes.

just look at this , so many sharp turns before landing. The pilot cannot see the runway until the final turn.
Today runway are so boring. you dun even know the plane landed.

Cross wind landing. Crabbing almost 45 degree. Superb display of piloting skill.

If I could open the window, I could have snatched the underwears hanging out on poles to dry in landings in old Kai Tak airport.
Very exciting each and every time in the landing. Takeoffs less fun.

there is a tiny little disney land in hong kong right, why they dun have a old kai tak landing simulator, and let the young people enjoy things they will never experience.

checkerboard marker located on the slope of the hill. Pilots used this as reference for turning into final. Kai tek approach is known as 'checkerboard approach'.
