SINGAPORE: The Sembawang-Nee Soon Town Council has been fined S$200 for mosquito breeding.
Officers from the National Environment Agency found 14 mosquito larvae in its water tanks.
The tanks are on the rooftops of Blocks 896C and 899A in Woodlands.
The NEA said in the last five years, eight water tanks in estates run by town councils were caught for mosquito breeding.
Town councils which break the law twice could be fined up to S$2,000.
The authorities are reminding town councils to step up efforts to prevent dengue.
Teo Ho Pin, coordinating chairman for PAP town councils and MP for Bukit Panjang, said: “Water tanks have got many areas which are difficult to access for normal inspection and become very challenging. You have water breeding in some of these places because the birds actually bring leaves and twigs and choke our rooftop, drains and it is quite difficult to inspect rooftop every day. So it becomes very challenging in some of these areas."
