2009: United returned to the Carling Cup final in 2009, the showpiece by now staged at the new Wembley stadium. After 120 goalless minutes against Tottenham, Ben Foster was United's hero, saving penalties from Jamie O'Hara and Vedran Corluka as United won the shoot-out 4-1. The team was: Ben Foster, John O'Shea, Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Nani, Carlos Tevez, Danny Welbeck

2010: United got a taste for the Carling Cup and were back at Wembley the year after for another final. United went behind early on when James Milner scored a penalty but Michael Owen equalised for Ferguson's men. Wayne Rooney's second-half header won United their fourth League Cup. Their team that day: Tomasz Kuszczak, Rafael, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-sung, Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov

1997: Ferguson lifts the FA Charity Shield at Wembley for the fourth time outright as league champions United beat FA Cup holders Chelsea 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Mark Hughes opened the scoring for Chelsea against his former club in the second half, before Ronny Johnsen equalised shortly afterwards. Frank Sinclair saw his penalty saved by Peter Schmeichel and Roberto Di Matteo struck the bar, while United converted all their kicks. It would be the last piece of silverware United lifted that year. United: Peter Schmeichel, Phil Neville, Gary Pallister, Ronny Johnsen, Denis Irwin, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham

Champions League (2): 1999, 2008

1999: Ferguson gets acquainted with the European Cup after two goals in three dramatic minutes from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stunned Bayern Munich and secured the Treble. United's season, and in particular their European run, were the stuff of fairytales. Paired with Bayern, Barcelona and Brondby in the group stage, United advanced as runners-up, but not before a couple of 3-3 thrillers with Barcelona and two draws with Bayern. They beat Inter Milan 3-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals and then Juventus 4-3 on aggregate in the last four. After Mario Basler's free-kick put United behind in the sixth minute, it looked as though the Treble dream was slipping away... until stoppage time. United's team that night: Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Ronny Johnsen, Jaap Stam, Denis Irwin, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Jesper Blomqvist, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole

article-2320280-0156140200000578-89_964x591.jpg

2008: Ferguson's second European Cup win was also dramatic. After topping their group ahead of Roma, Sporting Lisbon and Dynamo Kiev, United saw off Lyon and Roma before getting the better of Barcelona 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-final. The final was an all-English affair in Moscow against Chelsea and Cristiano Ronaldo gave United the lead with a towering header before Frank Lampard equalised. Didier Drogba was sent off in extra-time for slapping Nemanja Vidic and the game went to penalties. With the chance to win it for Chelsea, John Terry slipped, hit the post and cried. Edwin van der Sar's save from Nicolas Anelka confirmed United's victory. United's team that night: Edwin van der Sar, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez

European Cup-Winners' Cup (1): 1991

article-2320280-19AC9B69000005DC-213_964x554.jpg

1991: Alex Ferguson (left) with his first European trophy, the Cup-Winners' Cup. He was later to emulate Sir Matt Busby (right) and win the European Cup but the year after winning his first trophy (the FA Cup) he tasted glory on the Continent. They met Barcelona in the final where a double from Mark Hughes - a former Barca striker - secured a 2-1 win, with Ronald Koeman hitting a consolation. The victory was given extra significance by the fact it was by an English club in the first season of re-introduction to European competition following the ban after Heysel. United's team that day: Les Sealey, Denis Irwin, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Clayton Blackmore, Paul Ince, Mike Phelan, Bryan Robson, Lee Sharpe, Brian McClair, Mark Hughes
