SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for suspected involvement in a series of snatch thefts.

On March 30, 2013 at about 2.50am, a 24 year-old woman was walking alone along Upper Cross Street when a man snatched her mobile phone, valued at about $800, from behind and fled towards Pearl’s Hill Road.

The victim ran after the man but eventually lost sight of him. She sought help from a passerby who assisted her to call for the police.

Officers from Central Police Division conducted extensive enquiries and investigations to trace the culprit, finally apprehending him on April 25 at Jalan Kukoh.

Officers recovered a mobile phone related to a separate incident of theft on the same day. The victim had reported that her phone was stolen by an unknown man along Clementi Ave 3 on April 25 at about 4pm.

The suspect will be charged in Court on April 27 for an offence of Snatch Theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 which carries a maximum punishment of seven years imprisonment and caning. A Court order will be sought to remand the suspect for further investigations as he is believed to be involved in other similar snatch theft cases.
