Cable thief arrested thanks to tip-off

SINGAPORE - Police arrested a 27-year-old man believed to be responsible for a case of theft of electric cables in the vicinity of Teban Gardens Road following a tip-off from an alert member of public.
On Feb 27, 2013, at about 11.20am, Police received a call from a member of public who saw the suspect loitering suspiciously in the vicinity of Teban Gardens Road housing estate.
Officers from Clementi Police Division responded immediately and detained the suspect.
A bag containing some electric cables and a cutter were recovered from the suspect, and he was placed under arrest.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in another two similar cases over the past 2 months.
The suspect will be charged in Court on Mar 1 for the offence of Theft, under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 3 years and a fine.
Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong expressed his appreciation for the tip-off received from the member of public, and urged the public to continue to remain vigilant in looking out for suspicious persons in their neighbourhoods.
