Former factory operator Lian Huizuan, 27, died of a medical drug overdose on March 2, 2011, while serving her sentence for abusing drugs.

An inquest into her death revealed that the former factory operator was holding her legs in pain during a drill session with the other inmates in the yard.

But Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Claire Koo Qi Hui who was on the witness stand yesterday, said that Lian, when asked, declined to see a medical officer.

ASP Koo added that the mother of two also said “no” when asked if she wanted to take a rest.

The hearing will resume on Feb 23.

He knew there was something wrong with his daughter, who was in prison, because she had slurred speech and slow reaction.

But when he told prison officers of her condition, Mr Lian Hock Kwee, 59, said nothing was done.

Ms Lian Huizuan, 27, died due to toxicity from drugs she was taking for depression, in the presence of a chronic hepatitis C infection.

State Coroner Janet Wang said yesterday that “from evidence, the most probable cause of death was slow and sustained increase of amitriptyline toxicity... with chronic hepatitis C infection (that was) undetected from timely intervention...

“A greater degree of supervision by medical and non-medical staff could have (resulted in early detection).”
