A former safety officer, who side-swiped a lorry and hit the back of a stationary bus trapping his wife in the front passenger seat, was jailed for six weeks on Tuesday for causing his wife's death by negligence.

Bobby Elfian Mokhtar, 29, was also banned from driving for six years for causing the death of his wife, Ms Siti Norliza Mohamed Hamid, 25, by negligence and drink driving along Raffles Boulevard at 8am on April 1 last year.

The court heard that the father of two did not have proper control of his Toyota Vios car, causing it to veer to the left and side swipe against a stationary lorry on the extreme lane. The car then lurched forward and hit the back of a stationary SMRT bus.

The impact caused the front of the car completely caved inwards. Ms Siti Norliza was trapped at the front passenger seat with an open wound across her abdomen. The bus had to be moved forward and left car door pried open to extricate her. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 8.22am.
