On Jan 21, 2013, at about 3.45am, police received information that a wall outside a housing flat unit along Jalan Bukit Merah had been sprayed with loanshark-related graffiti.
3 suspects were arrested by the police in the neighbourhood shortly after.
One of them carried with him loanshark-related paraphernalia including three cans of paint, a bottle of spray-paint and a glove, amongst other items.
Follow up investigations led to the arrest of another suspect on the same day at about 4am.
The suspect, a 19 year-old male, was placed under arrest when his car was intercepted along Jalan Bukit Merah. The passports of the trio were found in the car. Preliminary investigations indicate that all the suspects are believed to have committed several cases of loanshark harassment in a few other housing estates.
The suspects will be charged in Court on Jan 22 for loanshark harassment. First-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment may face a jail term of not more than five years, a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, and may also face caning. They will be remanded for investigations.
