FOUR Sri Lankan nationals tried to recoup their casino losses by stealing gold chains from a jewellery store on May 30.

A district court today sentenced Jayasinghe Mudiyanselage Anushka, 30, to a year in jail to swiping five gold chains, worth more than $26,000.

The four foreigners arrived in Singapore on May 24 and would go to Marina Bay Sands casino to gamble. By the fifth day, they had lost most of their money.

They were walking along Serangoon Road on May 29 when Jayasinghe suggested staging a snatch theft to get back what they had lost.

They looked around and agreed on Minora Jewels in Dunlop Street. The next day, three of them entered the shop while Mohamed Niyabdeen Mohamed Hisam stood outside as a lookout.

Mohamed Nafik Nilamdeen Mohamed Nafik and Fahir Mohamed Ishak distracted staff by asking for the prices of various jewellery items.

Meanwhile, Jayasinghe grabbed the five gold chains being shown to him by a sales assistant and fled.
