Biker fined $2,500 for smashing his helmet on taxi's windscreen

A MOTORCYCLIST was fined $2,500 today for smashing his helmet on the windscreen of a taxi. Ooi Tioon Foon, 27, a Malaysian who works here as a storekeeper, committed the road rage offence at 8.30am on Aug 1.

The taxi had stopped at a bus stop along Boundary Road in Serangoon Gardens when Ooi dismounted and took off his helmet. He then slammed it against the taxi's side mirrors and windscreen, causing it to crack. He also pulled out the windscreen wipers. The damage was more than $1,200. A district court heard that Ooi has made full restitution.

Cabby Steven Yang Kian Chai, 62, remained in the taxi until Ooi rode off. When police arrived, Mr Yang, who did not suffer any injuries, asked to be sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital as he felt traumatised. He was given one day's medical leave.

Ooi, in his police statement, said that the taxi had encroached into his path and had sideswiped his leg and left gear lever. His lawyer, Mr Irving Choh, said that his client spent $500 on repairing the damage to the motorcycle.

SINGAPORE - A MOTORCYCLIST was fined $2,500 on Friday for smashing his helmet on the windscreen of a taxi.

Ooi Tioon Foon, 27, a Malaysian who works here as a storekeeper, committed the road rage offence at 8.30am on Aug 1.

The taxi had stopped at a bus stop along Boundary Road in Serangoon Gardens when Ooi dismounted and took off his helmet.

He then slammed it against the taxi's side mirrors and windscreen, cracking the glass.

He also pulled out the cab's windscreen wipers.

The total damage came to more than $1,200, and a district court heard that Ooi had made full restitution.

Cabby Steven Yang Kian Chai, 62, remained in the taxi until Ooi rode off.

When the police arrived, Mr Yang, who did not suffer any injuries, asked to be taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital as he felt traumatised.

He was given one day's medical leave.

His lawyer, Mr Irving Choh, said that his client spent $500 to repair the damage to the motorcycle.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kumaresan Gohulabalan told the court that there was no evidence to confirm or deny Ooi's account of events.

The maximum sentence is a six-month jail term and a $2,500 fine.
