SINGAPORE - About $165,000 worth of fake electronic accessories were seized yesterday as two men were arrested for counterfeiting.

In an 11-hour operation that started at 12pm on Nov 20, two men, aged 29 and 35, were nabbed by the police for their involvement in a syndicate which imported and distributed counterfeit electronic goods accessories.

Officers from the Intellectual Property Rights Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department mounted a raid at a wholesale shop located at Geylang, and seized more than 5,500 items of counterfeit electronic goods accessories which had an estimated street value of approximately $165,000.

The items seized were mainly accessories for mobile phones and tablet PCs such as protective covers, power chargers, batteries and ear-phones, which bore falsely applied trademarks of well-known brands.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the counterfeit goods had been imported into Singapore and thereafter distributed to local retailers in Singapore. Investigations against both subjects are ongoing.

Persons found guilty of selling or distributing infringing goods with falsely applied trade mark may be fined up to $10,000 for each goods, up to a total maximum fine of $100,000, or to an imprisonment term which may extend to 5 years, or both.
