Shop theft numbers down

04:45 AM Nov 14, 2012

SINGAPORE - The number of cases of shop theft over the first nine months of the year has decreased, continuing a steady decline over the past three years.

There were 220 cases of shop theft as at September this year, compared to 317 in the same period last year, and 501 in the same period in 2009.

The police released the figures on Monday, as it highlighted the importance of working with retailers to combat shop theft.

Between Nov 9 and Nov 11, four men and four women, aged between 28 and 62, were arrested for committing six separate cases of theft at a shopping mall along Syed Alwi Road, but the police noted that the said shopping mall has adopted many measures to deter potential shoplifters.

"Through the years, the shopping mall has proven to be a strong community partner in its close collaboration with the police and receptiveness to improved changes.

"Police officers are welcomed to patrol in its premises, adding to the visible uniformed presence and tough stance both stakeholders take against shoplifting.

"These efforts have greatly improved its shoplifting situation, ensuring that they play their part as a responsible retailer," the police said.

The shopping mall's operator has also increased its security manpower to deal with the expected larger crowds over weekends and festive occasions, and modified the mall's layout and displays to reduce blind spots and allow better visibility and monitoring of any potential offenders.

Meanwhile, investigations into the eight suspects arrested revealed that in all the cases, they had concealed the unpaid items in bags and plastic bags they brought along to the shopping mall.

The merchandise stolen by the suspects amounted to a total value of about S$805, ranging from S$3.50 to $129 per item. The stolen items include toiletries, apparel and food.

Those convicted of the offence of Theft in Dwelling can be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
