Man investigated for making false police report

SINGAPORE: A 32-year-old man who made a false police report has found himself in trouble with the law.
The man had called the police requesting for assistance. He told the police that he had handed over some S$6,000 while in a "confused" state to an unknown man.
In the course of the investigation, many discrepancies were detected in the account given to the police.
Subsequent interviews revealed that the man had made up the story due to financial difficulties. He had apparently stolen the cash that belonged to his room-mate and had lodged a false report to cover up his theft.
Investigations against the theft offence are ongoing.
Anyone who is convicted of giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant could face a jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both. A person convicted of an offence of theft in dwelling can face a jail term of up to seven years, and a fine.
Police said they would take stern action against anyone giving false information as this would have resulted in the diversion of valuable police resources from their proper deployment.
