SINGAPORE - A 35-year-old female Chinese national arrested for fraudulent pretence found herself slapped with an additional charge after attempting to bribe police officers.
On Aug 16 at about 6.25pm, Sergeant (Sgt) Denis Wu Wenhao and Special Constable Sergeant Muhammad Hermi Bin Hamidon from Ang Mo Kio Police Division were responding to a case along Hougang Central when they spotted a Chinese woman with a red plastic mug filled with money in her hand, reaching out to passers-by begging for money.
The officers made a check in the woman’s bag and found a stack of bills amounting to $235, purportedly received through begging.
While the officers were in the midst of examining the bills, the woman spoke to Sgt Wu in Mandarin and pleaded with him to take all the money inside her bag and to let her go. Sgt Wu immediately warned the woman that bribing a public servant is a criminal offence. Despite the warning, the woman continued to offer him the money in exchange for her freedom.
She was immediately placed under arrest for suspicion of begging for donations under fraudulent pretence.
The suspect has also been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) for investigations into the offence of attempted bribery.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Keok Tong San, Commander of Ang Mo Kio Division, commended his officers for displaying a high level of integrity. He said, “I'm proud that my officers held true to the core values of the Force by displaying impeccable integrity and a high standard of professionalism during the discharge of their duties.”
