Cannabis seized at Woodlands Checkpoint on 17 August 2012 (Central Narcotics Board)
SINGAPORE: Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Friday seized nine blocks of controlled drug suspected to be cannabis.
The blocks, which weigh some 470 grammes, have a street value of more than S$15,000.
On Friday at about 7.15am, officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint directed an arriving Malaysian-registered motorcycle for random checks.
The officers' suspicions were aroused when the 31-year-old male Malaysian rider avoided eye contact with them.
As the officers conducted a physical inspection, they noticed something hidden in the raincoat pants which were placed in the driver's backpack.
When they unfolded the pants, the officers detected the drugs.
The suspect was immediately detained and together with the seized exhibits, was handed over to Central Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.
The man is currently being investigated for unauthorised importation of a controlled drug.
The minimum penalty for the unauthorised importation of cannabis would be twenty year imprisonment and fifteen strokes of the cane.
