Conte handed 10-month ban in Scommessopoli scandal

The Old Lady boss has been hit with a lengthy suspension for his role in the match-fixing ring, but Leonardo Bonucci and Simone Pepe have both been acquitted

Aug 10, 2012 7:37:00 AM

201260hp2.jpg

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced that Juventus coach Antonio Conte has been suspended for 10 months due to his involvement in the Scommessopoli scandal.

The 43-year-old has been found guilty of failing to report attempts to influence the outcome of two Serie B matches against Novara and Albino Leffe in the 2010-11 season, when he was in charge of Siena.

He had previously reached a plea bargain deal with prosecutor Stefano Palazzi over a three-month ban, but the agreement was rejected by the FIGC's Disciplinary Committee.

Furthermore, Angelo Alessio, Conte's assistant at both Siena and Juventus, has been handed an eight-month ban for his involvement in the match-fixing probe.

Lecce and Grosseto have both been relegated from Serie B, while the presidents of both clubs have been suspended from all football activities for five years.

However, Juventus duo Leonardo Bonucci and Simone Pepe are among the players who were acquitted due to a lack of evidence, with veteran striker Marco Di Vaio also walking away unscathed.

Juventus duo Pirlo & Buffon left out of Trofeo Luigi Berlusconi squad

Juventus' Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon will not be featuring in the Bianconeri's upcoming Trofeo Berlusconi clash against AC Milan.

The Italian internationals featured in their side's 4-2 Supercoppa triumph against Napoli, but will not be available for selection when they take on the Rossoneri next Sunday.

"Andrea Pirlo will remain behind as he looks to shake off the effects of a heavy bruise sustained during the Super Cup victory over Napoli," a statement on the club's official website read.

"He is joined by Gigi Buffon, who will undergo a personalised training program in Vinovo."

In the 18 times the two clubs have met in the competition, both sides have won nine matches each, with Milan being the most recent victor having emerged 2-1 victors in last season's edition of the event.

FIGC announces 12-man benches for Serie A fixtures

Italian clubs have been handed the luxury of a naming a dozen substitutes for league, cup and youth matches throughout the season

Aug 21, 2012 10:20:00 PM

By Simon Harrison

109120hp2.jpg

Italian FA (FIGC) president Maurizio Beretta has approved the proposal for a larger number of substitutes for Serie A matches, only three months after the idea was initially presented to the organisation
by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Serie A teams will be forced to name a total of 23 players on a matchday, making their benches the largest in the highest tiers of world football.

The ruling will also be valid for Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana and Primavera Championship fixtures effective immediately.

However, the decision has already been met with stiff opposition from Roma coach Zdenek Zeman, who believes an 18-man matchday squad to be sufficient.

"For me it does not change very much," he told reporters.

"It's unnecessary. In my experience 18 players was sufficient."

The Serie A season is due to start on Saturday, with the opening fixture involving Fiorentina and Udinese set to be the first game to experience the changes.

Serie A preview: No Conte as Juve host Parma

23 August 2012

Juventus are hot favourites to open their Serie A title defence with a win, while AC Milan and Roma are also expected to fare well at home.

Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding manager Antonio Conte, banned from the touchline and the match-day dressing room for 10 months for failing to report instances of match fixing at a previous club, Juve will get their 2012/13 season underway at home to Parma on Saturday.

Juve were considered among several well-matched challengers for the title last year, but finished the season as the unbeaten champions with a remarkable 23 wins and 15 draws.

The Turin club's opening match at Juventus Stadium will mark 468 days since their last Serie A defeat, which ironically came at the hands of Parma in May 2011.

Elsewhere, Milan will start their campaign against the newly promoted Sampdoria at the San Siro on Sunday.

Roma, with veteran coach back at the helm 13 years after his last stint in charge of the club, will host Catania at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Vincenzo Montella will lead Fiorentina against Udinese in his first competitive match in charge since signing a two-year deal with the Tuscan club after Delio Rossi was sensationally sacked.

Italy international midfielder Alberto Aquilani featured in Fiorentina's final friendly match and is expected to make his debut alongside fellow new signings Gonzalo Rodriguez and Borja Valero (both formerly of Villareal), David Pizarro (Roma) and Mounir El Hamdaoui (Ajax).

And newly promoted Pescara have been handed the daunting task of hosting Inter Milan, who embark on a new era under the guidance of former youth team coach Andrea Stramaccioni.

Meanwhile, Napoli begin life without Ezequiel Lavezzi against Palermo, Genoa look to avoid another disappointing campaign at home to Cagliari and new manager Vladimir Petkovic takes charge of Lazio as they travel to Atalanta.

Torino, among the league's new boys, make the trip to Siena, while Chievo play host to Bologna.

Serie A wrap: Juve win after missing penalty

26 August 2012

287768header.jpg

Juventus shrugged off a penalty miss from Arturo Vidal to run out comfortable 2-0 winners against Parma.
Goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner and Andrea Pirlo sealed victory for the reigning champions on Serie A's opening weekend.

The Switzerland international turned in from Kwadwo Asamoah's cross just after the interval, atoning for his Chilean team-mate who had seen his kick saved from the spot by Antonio Mirante.

Three points were secured by Pirlo, whose low free-kick originally appeared to have been stopped before it was allowed on the advice of the fifth official.

After a quiet start to proceedings, Juventus started to show their dominance as the half wore on. In his first official game, Kwadwo Asamoah was a dynamic force on the left hand side.

Excellent work from Asamoah out wide led to another cross, and Lichtsteiner was in exactly the right place to calmly finish and put the hosts into a deserved lead.

Parma were rattled, and captain Alessandro Lucarelli was extremely lucky to only receive a booking for an ugly challenge on Vidal that appeared to use the elbow.

A second for Juve came in bizarre fashion just minutes later. Mirante appeared to have saved Andrea Pirlo's free kick right on the line.

But referee Romeo disagreed and, after some consultation with the fifth official, ruled that the veteran midfielder had scored.

Juve's next Serie A test comes on Sunday, when they will visit Udinese. Parma, meanwhile, host Chievo on the same day.

Fiorentina dominated possession, but needed a late Stevan Jovetic brace to wipe out Maicosuel's Udinese opener in their 2-1 victory.

Maicosuel gave Udinese the lead after 28 minutes on his debut when he was sent through the middle by Muriel to spring the offside trap and kept his cool, rolling an angled drive off the inside of the far post.

Fiorentina were pushing hard, but needed a stroke of luck to get the equaliser. Jovetic's shot took a huge deflection off Danilo to loop into the air and over a helpless Zeljko Brkic.

Jovetic scored the winner in stoppage time after he hooked down a cross-field pass and placed a snooker-shot into the far bottom corner.

Serie A wrap: Sampdoria shock AC Milan

27 August 2012

287854header.jpg

Sampdoria have stunned AC Milan 1-0 at home in the first round of the new Serie A season thanks to a headed goal from Andrea Costa.

In the shock of the opening weekend of Italy's top tier of football, newly-promoted Sampdoria upset last year's second-placed club despite Milan having the majority of possession at home on Sunday.

Milan had 60 percent of possession and took 23 shots for the match, with six forcing a save from Sampdoria's goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

But it was the visitors from Genoa who took the points when Costa leaped highest in the 58th minute to head Fernando Tissone's corner inside the far post.

Milan's city rivals Inter had a much more positive start to the season on Sunday, winning 3-0 over Pescara.

Inter took the lead away from home when Wesley Sneijder tapped in Diego Milito's cross in the 17th minute.

Just two minutes later, Inter made a mockery of the defence of last season's Serie B champions when Sneijder released new signing Antonio Cassano down the left who crossed to Milito for a simple finish.

Inter wrapped up their victory in the 81st minute with another goal from around the six-yard box, Milito setting up substitute Philippe Coutinho to lift the ball into the roof of the net.

That result put Inter to the top of the Serie A table where they share the lead with Napoli who defeated Palermo 3-0.

Napoli went ahead in first-half injury time thanks to a goal from Marek Hamsik.

The Slovak midfielder set up Christian Maggio for Napoli's second goal in the 79th minute, while Edison Cavani completed the impressive victory away from home with a header two minutes from time.

Roma had to rely on a 91st-minute goal from Nicolas Lopez to salvage a 2-2 draw at home against Catania, while Lazio defeated Atalanta 1-0 and Chievo won 2-0 over Bologna.

In other Serie A results, Genoa defeated Cagliari 2-0 and Siena played out a goalless draw with Torino.

Galliani: I never promised Cassano anything

The Milan director has reacted to the flamboyant attacker's statements, and has insisted that he never promised the forward an improved deal

Aug 27, 2012 12:05:00 PM

By Stefan Coerts

196215hp2.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has hit back at Inter attacker Antonio Cassano following the latter's accusations that he did not keep his promise to offer the Italy international a new and improved deal.

Cassano left the Rossoneri for their arch-rivals last week in a player-exchange deal also involving Giampaolo Pazzini, and stated that Galliani's behaviour was one of the main reasons for his exit after completing his move to the Nerazzurri.

Nevertheless, the Milan director has insisted that he never promised the attacker anything.

"Cassano? It's the first time that such a thing happens to me, and I also hope that it's the last time. I will only say that if I had made a promise then I would have kept it," Galliani stated toSky Sport Italia.

"I've never made any promises when it comes to extending contracts. Especially not if we were in 2011 and then to extend a contract that doesn't expire until 2014. I wouldn't do that.

"Anyone can understand wherein the truth lies, but I don't want to make further comments."

Cassano made his official Inter debut in the 3-0 win over Pescara on Sunday, and provided the assist for Diego Milito's strike.

Galliani pours cold water on Kaka, Palombo and Carroll transfer speculation

The Rossoneri executive revealed that following the capture of Bojan on loan from Roma, there will be no more manoeuvres in the transfer market from his side

Aug 28, 2012 7:07:00 PM

By Tom Webber

Adriano-Galliani-001.jpg

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has insisted that the outfit's transfer activity has been completed for the summer with the signing of Bojan, ruling out moves for Kaka, Andy Carrolland Angelo Palombo.

The Rossoneri announced the signing of the former Barcelona striker on a season-long loan from Roma on Tuesday and the club's chief executive officer was adamant that there will be no more deals, despite intense links to the Real Madrid, Liverpool and Sampdoria players.

"I continue to say it, but you do not believe me, with the signing of Bojan the market is closed, completely closed," Galliani said to reporters outside Milan's headquarters.

"[There will be] no trip to Madrid for Kaka, nor any signings like [Antonio] Nocerino last year.

"He [Palombo] was offered to us, but we refused the offer.

"Carroll? We have so many strikers."

Milan got their 2012-13 Serie A campaign off to the worse possible start as they suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Sampdoria last weekend.

Berbatov 'set for Fiorentina move'

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov flew to Italy on Wednesday to complete a move to Serie A club Fiorentina, a source close to the Bulgarian said.

<cite class="byline vcard" style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; color: rgb(119, 119, 119); font-size: 12px; display: block; font-family: Georgia, Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; vertical-align: middle; ">By Reuters | Eurosport – <abbr title="2012-08-29T06:45:03Z" style="border: 0px; font-variant: normal; ">6 hours ago</abbr></cite>

Eurosport - Dimitar Berbatov

"Fiorentina have agreed personal terms with Dimitar and they'll announce the deal very soon," the source, who asked not to be identified, said, adding the transfer was subject to Berbatov passing a medical.

Berbatov, who became United's most expensive player when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 for £30.75 million, had reached an agreement with the Serie A club on a two-year contract with an option for a further year.

The 31-year-old was the Premier League joint-top scorer in the 2010-11 season with 20 goals but has struggled to hold down a place in Alex Ferguson's starting line-up since and was keen to revive his career in another top European league.

Ferguson made it clear it was probably time for Berbatov, who is Bulgaria's all-time leading scorer with 48 goals, to look for a move when he signed Dutch striker Robin Van Persie from Arsenal prior to the start of the Premier League season.

If the deal is completed, Berbatov will become the fourth Bulgarian in Serie A after defender Nikolay Iliev and strikers Hristo Stoichkov and Valeri Bojinov, who played for Fiorentina between 2005 and 2007.

Football experts in Bulgaria believe the transfer could also lead to Berbatov ending his self-imposed international exile.

Earlier this year, Berbatov, who quit the national team in 2010, said he would be open to an approach from coach Luboslav Penev after he moved to a club where he could play regularly.

Alessandro Diamanti was impressive for Bologna as they put up a brave performance at home but their resistance faltered in the last quarter of an hour as Pazzini scored twice to complete his hat-trick and clinch victory for Milan.

Milan started brightest on Saturday and they went ahead after Bologna defender Nicolo Cherubin conceded a controversial penalty in the 16th minute.

After being caught out by a chipped ball over the top from the impressive Kevin-Prince Boateng, the defender dragged down Pazzini, who made the most of his fall.

Pazzini, who joined Milan in a swap deal with Inter Milan last week which saw Antonio Cassano go the other way, stepped up and slotted a firm penalty past Federico Agliardi.

Bologna grabbed their own penalty in the 42nd minute after Antonio Nocerino of Milan brought down Robert Acquafresca.

Diamanti, who was Bologna's best player for the match, sent Christian Abbiati the wrong way to draw his side level.

The second half was full of action with Boateng impressive for the visitors, while Diamanti continued to threaten for Bologna, but it was not until the 77th minute that the next goal was scored.

Luca Antonini's cross from the left looped up in the air off Bologna winger Marco Motta and was fumbled by Agliardi, allowing Pazzini to fire home the loose ball from close range.

Pazzini bagged his third on 85 minutes when he deftly flicked in Nocerino's low shot after the hosts had failed to clear the ball.

In the other Serie A match, Torino defeated fellow promoted club Pescara 3-0.

Alessandro Sgrigna scored Torino's first goal when he reacted first to Rolando Bianchi's flicked header in the penalty area and smashed the ball past Pescara goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

Bianchi started the move in the 58th minute that led to Torino's second goal, releasing Sgrigna in behind Pescara's defence, with the 32-year-old striker cutting the ball back to Matteo Brighi who finished smartly.

After playing a role in his side's first two goals, Bianchi finally got on the scoresheet himself just four minutes later.

Full-back Salvatore Masiello crossed to the back post towards Bianchi and Torino's captain rose above his opponent to head the ball into the net to complete a comfortable win for the home team.
