Chelsea are not superior to Atletico Madrid, says Simeone

The Argentine trainer is looking forward to the Monaco showpiece versus the Premier League giants, and is hopeful of causing an upset

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is eagerly anticipating Friday's European Super Cup face-off with Chelsea, and is confident that his side can trouble the Champions League holders.

The Blues have strengthened their squad with players such as Oscar, Eden Hazard, Cesar Azpilicueta and Victor Moses this summer, but Simeone feels they are by no means better than Atletico.

"People may think Chelsea are superior because they won the Champions League, but when there is only one match to play we all know that everything becomes more difficult," he told the official Uefa website.

"We don't have anything to prove. It is a match between two teams that have won two different cups – and we are very proud of the cup we won.

"We know the Super Cup match is beautiful, but we focus on every single match. We know how important it is. After having won the Europa League, and now facing the Champions League winners, we are in a nice place. I hope we can enjoy it."

Friday's match in Monaco kicks off at 20:45CET.

Platini warns clubs to cut spending or face European ban

The former France star has revealed that 27 clubs are under a watchful eye after their spending because a concern for the governing body, with bans a possible outcome

Sep 2, 2012 9:35:00 AM

By Matt Davis

194948hp2.jpg

Uefa president Michel Platini has revealed that he has given 27 clubs a deadline to make sure they adhere to the strict Financial Fair Play rules, or face a ban from European competition.

The former France star added that the move comes after a number of clubs started reneging on scheduled payments for players.

“They were told to sort their finances out before June 30. Then they had until July 15 to discuss any problems,” Platini told reporters.

“The next check on September 30 will be vital. For clubs who can’t follow the rules of the Financial Fair Play system, it is over and out of Europe.

“We are protecting clubs who have sold players and struggle to receive payment. A number of clubs have had to chase their money for years.”

Despite the regulations, European champions Chelsea continued to spend this summer, totalling an outlay of £80 million on the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin.

On the other hand, Premier League champions Manchester City were much more prudent during the window, spending a modest £15m on Jack Rodwell before a frantic deadline day saw five new faces arrives for an estimated £30m, as they reduced their outlays in light of the dangers FFP hold.

Ahead of competing against the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus in the competition's stand-out group, City have selected new signings Javi Garcia, Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell with the latter looking to make his Champions League debut.

Arshavin has also been sleceted despite not being included in the first-team plans for the Gunners' last two Premier League games against Stoke and Liverpool.

Also included in the Gunners' 25 man squad are new signings Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud as well as Theo Walcott who was subject to speculation regarding his future at the end of the summer transfer window. Florent Malouda has been left out of Chelsea's Champions League squad for the 2012-13 season.

Despite interest from a number of clubs, Malouda did not finalise a move before the end of the transfer window, with his wage demands rumoured to be a barrier to a move.

However, despite remaining at Stamford Bridge and making 26 league appearances last season, the 32-year-old is yet to feature for the Blues this season in any competition.

The west London club have excessively strengthened their attacking ranks this summer recruiting the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin, pushing the France international down the pecking order.

All summer signings, including Cesar Azpilicueta and Victor Moses, have been included in 33-man squad, consisting of 25 ‘A-List’ players and eight ‘B-List’.
