How do you know that they were religious prior to going to prison? I believe that a majority of them became religious after going to prison.
As you said, people with or without religion will still lie, slander and engage in abusive speech. And so, people with or without religion will also kill, rape, steal, rob, etc.
Those with religions have a "guiding principle" not to lie, slander, engage in abusive speech, etc. Whether they follow that "guiding principle" to perfection is another matter.
My question is: What sort of "guiding principle" do those without religions follow?
