Lorry driver jailed one week for killing pedestrian

By Alvina Soh | Posted: 08 June 2012 1240 hrs

SINGAPORE: A lorry driver was jailed one week after he drove into a prohibitied area and killed an elderly pedestrian.

60-year-old Ang Chong Kow was also disqualified from driving for five years.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of causing the death of 67-year-old Yeo Lee Ting through a negligent act.

A second charge of contravening the Road Traffic Act was also taken into consideration.

On 15 June 2010, Ang was on his way to Bowmont Gardens in Siglap to transport soil from a construction site.

As he was about to turn into Siglap Drive, he noticed a "No Entry" sign at the entrance, which stated that vehicles weighing more than 2,500kg in unladen weight were not allowed.

Despite that, Ang continued to drive his heavy vehicle into Siglap Drive.

He later turned into Bowmont Gardens, where he failed to notice Yeo who was crossing the road.

The lorry hit her, but Ang did not notice until he felt his lorry run over something.

He only realised that he had collided into Yeo after he alighted from the vehicle and saw her lying underneath the lorry.

Yeo sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In mitigation, the court heard that Ang, who has been driving for 30 years, was deeply remorseful.

For negligence, he could have been jailed up to two years and fined.
