A man who conspired with his colleague to stage a break-in at his office and steal $45,000 was jailed for nine months on Friday.

Tan Tien Poh, 31, was an assistant manager of Asli Village Food Court in Downtown East when he abetted assistant cook Roszamri Ma'arof, 27, to steal from their employer and cook up a story of a break-in early this year.

Investigation showed that between Jan 15 and 16, Tan suggested to Roszamri, a Malaysian, that they stage a burglary at the premises to steal money in the office safe.

The court heard that on Jan 24, during the Chinese New Year holidays, Tan took a cab to Downtown East and waited for Roszamri who went to the main office of the food court and stole the safe.

Man jailed for staging break-in

SINGAPORE: An assistant manager has been sentenced to nine months' jail for staging a break-in at his workplace and accusing his accomplice of being the mastermind.

Tan Tien Poh, 31, committed the offence when he was working for Asli Village Food Court in Downtown East.

Between January 15 and 16 this year, he suggested to an assistant cook, Roszamri Ma'arof, 27, that they stage a break-in to steal the money in the office safe.

At 4.30am on January 24, Tan counted the day's earnings of S$45,000 and placed the money in the safe.

He left the office to meet Roszamri at Downtown East.

From there, they took a taxi to the food court.

Roszamri went on to steal the safe.

The two later split the amount at Tan's residence in Rivervale Drive.

Shortly past noon on the same day, Tan called the police to report the break-in.

A day later, Tan was arrested.

Cash of S$30,000 was seized from him.

Roszamri was caught on January 31 at Woodlands Checkpoint.

During investigations, Tan accused Roszamri of being the mastermind, saying he only wanted a share of the money out of greed.

Tan's lawyer told the court his client, who was earning S$2,000 a month, was not facing any financial difficulty but committed the crimes on impulse.

He added that Tan had made full restitution to the owners and had shown remorse.

For stealing from his employer, Tan could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.

For providing false information to the authorities, he could have been jailed up to one year, fined a maximum of S$5,000, or both.
