Man stabs self and burns charcoal to commit suicide

A 67-year-old man was so desperate to evade jail-time that he committed suicide in his own home.
Hong Qing Jiang, a drug addict, has been in and out of drug rehabilitation centres for many years.
He was sentenced to seven years' jail about ten years ago, and was released in 2007 for good behaviour.
In November last year, he relapsed and was taking drugs in his home at Blk 219, Boon Lay Avenue, when officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau showed up.
Backed into a corner, Hong picked up a penknife and threatened to hurt himself.
Failing to do so, Hong instead stabbed himself with a knife and was sent to the hospital.
After he was discharged from hospital, Hong, believed to be afraid of going back to jail, took matters into his own hands and committed suicide.
He did so by locking himself in his bedroom and burning charcoal.
While he died, his grandson remained sleeping in the next room.
