Suspected robber claims to be victim himself

Published on Jan 30, 2012

A man who allegedly robbed a taxi driver, then lied to police officers about being robbed himself, was arrested on Sunday.

At about 6am on Sunday, the 21-year-old man boarded a taxi along Yishun Avenue 3. Once in the cab, he allegedly whipped out a knife and put it to the taxi driver's neck, before shouting 'robbery' in Hokkien.

But the 44-year-old cab driver refused to back down and fought back. In the ensuing struggle, the cabby was cut on his hands and ended up losing $100 in cash. He lodged a police report soon after.

Police officers investigating the case later spotted a man who fit the description of the suspect at about 6.40am. When approached, he claimed he had been robbed of his money and mobile phone.
