The term "Keling"
Long past the end of the Kalinga Kingdom, derivatives from its name continued to be used as the general name of India in what are now Malaysia and Indonesia. "Keling" was and still is in use in these countries as a word for "Indian", though since the 1960s Indians came to consider it offensive.

The above came from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalinga_(India)

So it is not derogatory. Don't know about Ah Neh though.

Cheers!

There's an entire town in Indonesia named Keling.

Go to Google Maps and type in 'Keling, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia'.

Just curious, is wikipedia authoritative and contents therein conclusive?

The word kling per ce is never derogatory .Kampung Kling Mosque, kapitan Kling,Jalan Tanjung Kling, "Peranakan Kling" ....and so and so forth are written and accepted historical words. Not only in Malay annals but also in British documents, stamps and census.

It used to be an affix of pride---the word kling was associated with intelligence, wealth, bravery and etc.Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir (1796–1854), also known as Munshi Abdullah, is regarded as the most cultured among Malays who ever wrote, one of the greatest innovators in Malay lettersand the father of modern Malay literature.refereed to himself as a proud kling because of his Indian parentage.

However, the word keling became derogatory very much because we meant it to be.Any word can become derogatory if you intend it to be.That is why even in English law the word 'good faith' is a key factor in contractual law.In short,if you bought a stolen good in good faith than you are not privy or party to the crime.Same applies in criminal law too,a murder is measured by your premeditation to commit the crime---not otherwise.
