SINGAPORE: It started off as a skirmish between two friends but ended up with one of them sentenced to jail for causing hurt to three police officers.

Factory production operator Idris Husin received nine months' jail for hurting a staff sergeant, an assistant superintendant and a police sergeant as he was being arrested.

The court heard that Idris, 55, had fought with a friend at a coffeeshop in Woodlands Avenue 6 on August 4, in the presence of police officers.

They were both arrested but the trouble did not end there.

As Idris was being escorted to the police vehicle by Assistant Superintendant Phang Chiew Shia, he elbowed her in the stomach and spat at her.

As he was being led into the police car, he kept hitting Staff Sergeant Stanley Png on the chest with his head and tried to bite his chest.

Idris continued to be violent even though he was handcuffed.

He kicked Police Sergeant Tan Boon Leng in the right leg, spat and swore at him.

Pleading for leniency on Tuesday, Idris said that he was drunk and was not aware of his actions.

However, District Judge Low Wee Ping, who told Idris he should not drink if he cannot control himself, said he deserved a deterrent and long sentence.

I've never heard of such a case in my time before, three against one in handcuff and got beaten up and spat at. I'm not saying police officers in my time were invincible. There was once my colleague in a slack of alert got punched. He recovered quick enough to strike back and that assailant spent a few weeks in hospital and the following few years in prison. Even for those who were fooling around and not paying attention during police academy unarmed combat lessons, the trained police reflex should be take out the baton and bash him until he's in such pain that he's unable to move any of his four limbs with any strength.

That's justifiable as necessary force since he's violent and ready to attack police officers. Just drag him back to station to record charges of resisting arrest and assaulting police on top of whatever charges he's suspected for. Then drag him to hospital and hand over a copy of the charge to the doctor and handcuff him to the bed. Flexcuff his legs too and tell the doctor that's he has tendency for violence and escape and may even kick doctors and nurses.

That'll make the doctors' and nurses' job harder since they'll have to push his bed around instead of just wheelchairing him for out-of-ward procedures like X-ray and operation if required. Anyway it's free medical care for suspects under police arrest; police will pay.

Now don't start screaming police brutality, it's necessity because as you've seen in this piece of news, there're even more brutes out there. As ablebodied law abiding citizens, you either defend yourself or let the police defend you against brutes. And what about defenseless women and children who have no choice but to rely on police solely for their safety in society? It's the same as military, the defender must be more violent than the aggressor in order to subdue the aggressor. I hope this piece of news is an isolated freak case. If this is the norm now, then I worry.

Classic case precedent was Rodney King, Los Angeles 1992. He drove a stolen car and was chased by four officers in two patrol cars and finally cornered. Besides car theft, he was already wanted as suspect for illegal firearms and drugs. The four officers bashed him up properly to ensure immobility before arresting him. One busybody moron happened to be at the scene with a camcorder. He used the footage to complain against police brutality and it became a bigger court case than the crimes Rodney King had committed. And Rodney King being black, it sparked off racial riots in LA and all across USA when the four officers were aquitted.

So what is it you all and we all want? Complain police brutality when police do their job or mock at police incompetency when they don't?

why didn't the police officers beat up this suspect proper? Now police is like saf need 3 officers to 1 suspect.

He should have bite the female ASP's chest... Not the male staff rite? Unless he's gay!

Sinkie poodles are good for several things:

1) Bullying dissidents such as CSJ.
2) Sleeping inside 'patrol' car in multi-storey car park
3) Taking frequent breaks at coffeeshops and tar-pau loads of food before slowly walking back.
4) Boasting on Crimewatch how good they are.
5) Royally fucking up and letting convicted criminals, even murderers, escape overseas.

The media release came from court proceedings.

The Police are not going to disclose what happened to the chap after he was secured in the vehicle and then brought back to the station. The chap is also no going to say how he was punched and kicked in the vehicle and how he lost his two front teeth and how fell in the lock up twice and broke both his arms.

The incident took place 4 months ago. More than sufficient time to fix him and looking new for court case.

I have yet to hear a Police Force in this world that serves scones and tea to a chap after assaulting them.

SPF standard heading south. My hunch is that the 3 arresting officers were perceived as boy scout or girl guides calibre by the accused. Even when drunk or high on drugs, a person is still conscious of what is happening around him/her. Above incident merely exposes the decline in policing standard by the SPF.

That's the sad story. From rusty-faced policemen to church choir boys standard.

Most of the uniformed officers are all very young, even those Station Insp rank. When called upon to solve domestic disputes, they are far too young to handle middle aged complainants and their problems. Like asking son/daughter to solve papa-mama or grandpa-grandma problems. How to?
