Potong Pasir residents raise concerns after stabbing incident

By Monica Kotwani, Wayne Chan | Posted: 05 December 2011 2051 hrs

SINGAPORE: A stabbing incident involving youths in Potong Pasir Avenue 1 last week has left some residents concerned about their safety.

On December 1, a 'staring incident' led to the stabbing at a McDonald's outlet in Potong Pasir.

Anand Ravindran, a student at Raffles Institution, was knifed while his friend Don Tan, who is from St Andrews Secondary School, was punched. Both boys are 17 years old.

Most Potong Pasir residents Channel NewsAsia spoke to said they were not worried as the incident is a first in the area.

Potong Pasir resident Sherry Tai said: "Once in a while, they (such things) will happen, but not so often. I find the kids quite okay. I always see the kids studying or doing revision here."

However, other residents had their concerns.

Murali Veeramuthu, who is a long-time resident in the area, said: "It's a bit scary. This is the first time I'm hearing (of a) stabbing (incident in the area). More security must be kept in this place. At this moment, it's okay for small kids but I'm a bit worried about the teenagers."

MP for the area, Sitoh Yih Pin, told Channel NewsAsia he has requested for more police presence.

Mr Sitoh said: "This is a very unfortunate incident which should not have happened. I've spoken to the police and I've requested them to increase the patrols around the estate.

"In addition, one of the things that we're doing is that we're organising more events for residents of Potong Pasir, especially the children and school kids, so that they have things to do during the holidays and hopefully that will keep them off the streets."

Mr Sitoh added he has spoken to the parents of the victims.

"I've also visited Don, one of the students who got punched. I've spoken to his mother. They're okay. I've also spoken to Anand's father. Anand's medical condition has stabilised."

Five teenagers, aged between 15 and 17, have since been charged for the attack on the boys.

A youth has died after another youth attack over the weekend.

The attack took place at about 6am on 3 December, last Saturday, at the carpark of Central Square mall located at Havelock Road. The location of the attack also happens to be opposite the Subordinate Courts and beside the Ministry of Manpower.

Five youths had attacked a 20-year-old youth, Chen Zi Quan, beating him to death in 15 minutes. Two of the suspects have been arrested and charged with murder, while three youths are still on the run.
The cause of the attack remains unknown for now.

Coming just after a teen was stabbed by youths in Potong Pasir, members of the public are now shocked that youths had beaten a man to death. An employee of a nearby convenience store told reporters that he had heard loud fighting from the carpark at the time of the incident.

According to the employee, police had arrived soon after the incident to seal off the scene. A maintenance worker informed reporters that there are several pubs and night clubs in the area where young people like to hang around.

He also revealed that there are around two fights in the area every week, but so far, none as serious as this one.

One of the seven teenagers who attacked a Raffles Institution (RI) student in broad daylight over a staring incident last year has been put on 2 years’ probation.

According to the Straits Times newspaper, Isaac Ang Shi Ming, 17, will be required to wear an electronic tag on his ankle to track his whereabouts and to ensure that he is home from 10pm to 6am.

His parents have also signed a $5,000 bond to ensure their son, the first to face justice for the attack, will behave.

Isaac pleaded guilty in March for being part of the youth gang that attacked Anand Ravindran, who was 17 during the attack in December last year, reported the newspaper.

Anand’s friend, Don Tan Wen Bin who had been with him during the scuffle, managed to flee the scene with only a black eye.

Anand, however, suffered a worse fate.

The RI student was stabbed twice in his back by the same 15-year-old boy who had punched Don in the face, according to The Straits Times.

Anand has since recovered from his injuries and the 15-year-old responsible for the stabbing will face the Juvenile Court in May.

Isaac’s lawyer, Christopher Bridges said that his client’s sentence was appropriate seeing that Isaac had not been the one who stabbed Anand.

In his mitigation plea, Mr Bridges said his client is now being treated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Should Isaac abuse the terms of his probation, he could face a jail time of up to seven years and be caned.

The cases against the other five juvenile delinquents are still pending.
