Technician Jumat Yusoff does not know how to swim, but that did not stop him from wading into Bedok Reservoir last Friday.
The 54-year-old did it to save the life of someone who did not feel life worth living any more. On Monday, Mr Jumat was among seven people honoured by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for their public spiritedness. All seven had played a part to stop drownings in two separate incidents at the reservoir last week.
Last Friday, Mr Jumat, who works at national water agency PUB, was making his usual rounds at the reservoir at 4.25pm when he saw a man knee-deep in water, in the part of the reservoir near Sheng Siong supermarket.
He quickly waded in and grabbed the 29-year-old's arm, while his colleague, senior technician Abdul Rashid, 37, called the police.
