On 15 July, Eunos, Kaki Bukit and Serangoon divisions head over to Johor Bahru with just one goal in mind - to eat as much durian as possible.

There was indeed a great deal of excitement and anticipation over the one day 'durian tasting' trip. Indeed, the residents could look forward to a full day's programme besides eating durian including a visit to a brown rice retail shop, mushroom farm, shop selling all things tapioca and of course the mandatory opportunities to bring home lots of tidbits and goodies.

Singaporeans obsession with durian, the 'king of fruits' is well known, and it was evident that the residents took their durian eating seriously. Some residents were determined to save themselves for the big event, eating a light lunch in anticipation of the feast of durians to come. Things certainly got off to a bang for MPs Sylvia Lim, Pritam Singh, Mohd Faisal Manap as well as newly elected MP Png Eng Huat who was here to reconnect with the Kaki Bukit residents he had served for over 9 months, as they were each asked to light a firecracker upon arrival at the durian farm.

Far more spectacular was the durian eating that was going on. Whatever ones preferences, whether for the sweet or bitter flavoured durian, the softer or firmer textured flesh, or whether larger or smaller fruit was better, there was durian in abundance.

The trip ended with a sumptuous 8 course dinner at restaurant 88 where all 15 buses gathered together. It had been a fruitful day judging by the number of bags the residents had to unload at the Singapore customs - bags full of everything from pomelos to pineapples, tidbits, crackers, and snacks of all types, and of course more durian since you can't really get enough.

It was close to midnight by the time we all arrived back to our respective divisions tired but happy. Despite the occasional mishap, and wrong turn, it was an enjoyable trip for all - a chance to bond with family members and friends, for the MPs to relax and interact with residents in a casual setting, to shop, and of course to indulge in our national obsession with durians.

Singaporeans obsession with durian, the 'king of fruits' is well known, and it was evident that the residents took their durian eating seriously. Some residents were determined to save themselves for the big event, eating a light lunch in anticipation of the feast of durians to come. Things certainly got off to a bang for MPs Sylvia Lim, Pritam Singh, Mohd Faisal Manap as well as newly elected MP Png Eng Huat who was here to reconnect with the Kaki Bukit residents he had served for over 9 months, as they were each asked to light a firecracker upon arrival at the durian farm.

Far more spectacular was the durian eating that was going on. Whatever ones preferences, whether for the sweet or bitter flavoured durian, the softer or firmer textured flesh, or whether larger or smaller fruit was better, there was durian in abundance.

The trip ended with a sumptuous 8 course dinner at restaurant 88 where all 15 buses gathered together. It had been a fruitful day judging by the number of bags the residents had to unload at the Singapore customs - bags full of everything from pomelos to pineapples, tidbits, crackers, and snacks of all types, and of course more durian since you can't really get enough.

It was close to midnight by the time we all arrived back to our respective divisions tired but happy. Despite the occasional mishap, and wrong turn, it was an enjoyable trip for all - a chance to bond with family members and friends, for the MPs to relax and interact with residents in a casual setting, to shop, and of course to indulge in our national obsession with durians.

15.07.2012 - 1 Day Durian Trip (Eunos)


On 15 July, Eunos, Kaki Bukit and Serangoon divisions head over to Johor Bahru with just one goal in mind - to eat as much durian as possible.

There was indeed a great deal of excitement and anticipation over the one day 'durian tasting' trip. Indeed, the residents could look forward to a full day's programme besides eating durian including a visit to a brown rice retail shop, mushroom farm, shop selling all things tapioca and of course the mandatory opportunities to bring home lots of tidbits and goodies.
