Is this the beginning of their GRAND STRATEGY to prep you peasants for HO CHING as next President?

HO CHING has all the paper qualifications to meet their "criteria" which was passed in parliament, inclduing these:

Criteria for President:
He or she must have for a period of not less than three years held office —
as Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker, Attorney-General, Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Auditor-General, Accountant-General or Permanent Secretary;[14]
as chairman or chief executive officer of the Central Provident Fund Board, the Housing and Development Board, the Jurong Town Corporation or the Monetary Authority of Singapore;[15]
as chairman of the board of directors or chief executive officer of a company incorporated or registered under the Companies Act[16] with a paid-up capital of at least S$100 million or its equivalent in foreign currency;[17] or
in any other similar or comparable position of seniority and responsibility in any other organization or department of equivalent size or complexity in the public or private sector which, in the opinion of the Presidential Elections Committee, has given him or her such experience and ability in administering and managing financial affairs as to enable him or her to carry out effectively the functions and duties of the office of President.[18]

NEWS!
1 in 2 Singaporeans would vote for a female president
Channel NewsAsia - Thursday, August 7SINGAPORE
: One in two Singaporeans would vote a female President into the Istana, and four in five would accept a woman Cabinet Minister, if a recent survey is anything to go by.

In the poll of 1,256 Singaporeans, conducted by MyMailMoment.com, a lifestyle research portal of SingPost, 63 per cent of the female respondents said they would vote for a woman President, compared to 58 per cent of male respondents.

Surprisingly, the oldest age group — those aged 50 and above — seemed the most receptive to the idea of a woman president.

Meanwhile, 83 per cent of respondents would accept a female Minister, with women perceiving a female minister to be more capable than her male counterpart.

Lauding the findings, Ms Constance Singam, president of the Association of Women for Action and Research, said: “It shows that Singaporeans are open and that they recognise that women can be leaders and capable, and why not?”

Sociologist Paulin Straughan of the National University of Singapore said: “It suggests endorsement for the position that women are welcomed in positions of higher office. It speaks volumes of women already holding positions of influence — if they hadn’t done well, then you wouldn’t have this kind of affirmation.”

A woman has never been a fullfledged Cabinet Minister, although Dr Seet Ai Mee served briefly as Acting Minister for Community Development and Sports in 1991.

As for current political office holders, four are women: Minister of State(Community Development, Youth & Sports) Yu—Foo Yee Shoon, Senior Minister of State (National Development and Education) Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State (Finance and Transport) Lim Hwee Hua, Mayor and Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Environment and Water Resources) Amy Khor.

Released in conjunction with the National Day, the survey was part of a broader survey of 2,017 people, who were asked their opinion on nationalism, politics, job environment and cost of living. Eighty—seven per cent who took part were Singaporean citizens, the rest permanent residents and foreigners in Singapore.

A third were willing to switch citizenship or permanent residency elsewhere if an opportunity came up.

Asked if they felt a strong sense of belonging to Singapore, 26 per cent gave a negative response, while 59 per cent said they would stay and fight for Singapore in a war.

These figures compare to Today’s own National Day survey last year, in which just over half of those polled — 466 citizens here and abroad — said they would lay down their lives for the country. And 76 per cent were proud or very proud of being a Singaporean.

On the latest findings, Nominated Member of Parliament Siew Kum Hong noted there are already concerns that Singapore is seen as a place to make money and “a hotel of sorts, which people will leave if greener pastures are available”.

“Certainly we should investigate further, and invest more effort in making Singapore a place that people are emotionally attached to,” he said. — TODAY/sh

Something is going on, PJ asks relevant question.
The baboon in the istana is ailing.
Who is next to guard the wardrobe?
The hint is clear.

Bro, yes they do have to take the trouble.

First, Ho Ching is PM wife. I doubt many people will welcome the idea that PM wife be made President. It makes a mockery of checks and balances, okay, it IS already a mockery, but this will only make it the mother of all mockeries. I suspect Lau Lee will be very thrilled by the idea, and he would want it to happen because it's great for his family name.

Second, Ho Ching's role in Temasek's financial performance do not leave a sweet taste in peasants' mouths, rightly or otherwise. Almost everybody knows about the multi-billion dollar losses. Her ability has been called to question, and few people believe that she'd be sitting up or surviving this long there if she were not connected to the Lee family. To reward her with...gulp..the Presidency of Singapore would simply be way way too much, even for numb Singapore peasants.

So Ho Ching is not a natural peasants' choicefor Presidency. If Lee & Lee want it that way, they'll have to really soft-sell the idea first, obliquely. And then let some events happen sometime in the near future to create awareness, buzz and discussion on the subject to let this possible idea slowly sink into peasants' consciousness. The State Times will have a play a major role in this strategy by, for example, publishing centerspread stories about her family life, the charities she support, how she cares about the peasants, blah blah blah. They'll do front page stories about her meetings with foreign dignitaries and make a big deal out of her virtues and principles in relation to her all-important role of growing Singapore's reserves. Then the next thing, some PAP junior ministers will submit her name as President, with another PAP member as competitor. The rest will be history.

AT this moment, she's a cold candidate i.e. people wont swallow it if they suddenly announce her move. The PAPpies do not always ignore peasants' sentiments; what they do is to get their way by systematically softening peasants' negative feelings, mostly with some well-time good news such as freebies, off-budget cash and so on. You can easily anticipate their moves, it's like a Standard Operating Procedure -- always predictable, on time, never fail.

They've mastered the art of "persuading" peasants. They can even sell refrigerators to eskimos if they wanted.

PJ,

You are absolutely right about the SOP. It is so SOP until it is boring and tiring but the funny thing is the majority do not spot them and get swayed by the snake oil salesmen time and time again.

.... as we know, the president by far is just a public figure, supposedly acting as a neutral person to check the policies & for other diplomatic purposes. even the late ah-meng would have fulfilled the jobscopes easily. now that she's gone, her daughter hong-bao could also do just as good a job as her late mother.

think about it, hongbao is quite a hit among kids & foreigners, many dont mind paying top dollar just to have breakfast with her. she's become accustomed to interaction with human, n docile by nature. truth be told, she's probably better recognized worldwide than any of our sg idol winners, or even some politicians.

to reside within the fences of clemenceau... shouldnt be very much a problem, cos its definately a lot better than her current confinements at mandai.

A President is the people's popular leader. HC doesn't posses any of the qualities.

So far the best president we had is Wee Kim Wee. I think what made him stood out exhibits poise and grace and at the same time approachability. I think the closest we can go for is Prof Tommy Koh.

Off hand I would choke on the idea but when I think of Ah Boy and the Old Man having to kow-tow to her...I am most amused to see how it will playout!
