Police launched all-night raids in red-light districts here to flush out young women from China who are into the flesh trade, ahead of the national day celebrations.
The Chinese women have become a major source of social problem in this border city.
Anti-vice police from Kuching flew into Miri on Tuesday and, from midnight to early yesterday morning, carried out simultaneous swoops on pubs and karaoke joints.
By dawn, they had rounded up more than two dozen prostitutes, mostly from China.
Miri Police Chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim confirmed that the raids were carried out by police squads from Kuching.
Miri, located some 35km south of the Brunei border, has become a favourite "business centre" for these China women, who ply their trade in hotels, motels, pubs, karaoke joints, massage centres and even shophouses.
