LA-based S'porean creates magic on the silverscreen
3-D whiz kid Steven Ong is making his mark giving the sheen that makes Hollywood's movies shine.
By Stacey Chia

IF YOU plan on watching the film The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor, look out for a pool of water that sparkles like diamonds.

The effect was done by a Los Angeles-based Singaporean, Mr Steven Ong, 33, who toiled 11 months to create it.

He is a senior effects technical director for film production studio Rhythm & Hues, where he has been working for a year.

The studio won an Oscar for visual effects this year for the The Golden Compass, a fantasy flick starring Nicole Kidman.

Mr Ong has been living in Los Angeles for five years with his Singaporean wife, who works for an asset management company.

Prior to that, the Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate worked in Singapore as a freelance 3-D artist for commercials.

He moved to Los Angeles after he was offered a job as an effects artist by United States production studio Digital Domain.

He later moved on to Sony Pictures Imageworks and then to Rhythm & Hues.

Mr Ong, who is back here for a holiday, has also worked on other hits like Superman Returns and The Day After Tomorrow.

Does he mingle with Hollywood celebrities? 'Yes I've seen them. In magazines,' he said with a laugh.
