Political changes will mean tougher time for PAP
PROPOSED political changes to provide for more diverse voices in Parliament will make life harder for the ruling PAP but the move would ultimately be good for Singapore.
At the PAP convention yesterday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged party members to prepare for a tougher fight at the next general election as he reminded them about the changes that were announced in May this year.
They are: the minimum number of single-seat wards would be increased from eight to 12; the average size of Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) would go down; the Nominated MP (NMP) system would be entrenched and the minimum number of opposition MPs in Parliament would be raised from three to nine through the Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) scheme.
The changes all add up to more contests during the next GE, he said.
'Every branch must be ready for a fight. Never assume that you are going to have a walkover,' he added.
On the part of party headquarters, he said the PAP is now tracking its branches very closely.
'We are monitoring performance, we are tracking branch secretaries and key members. We are also doing more to develop them and to recognise their contributions,' he said.
The purpose of all this tracking is to make sure the party has a strong network on the ground by the time the election rolls around, with people who are ready and committed.
'Make sure that when we press the button, things work,' he said.
Still, he believed that party members would welcome the changes and be ready to fight.
PM Lee said: 'The changes to the election rules are going to make it tougher for the ruling party, there's no doubt about it. But I think this is good for the PAP and this is good for Singapore.'
