  • KOTA BAHARU, July 1 (Bernama) -- The people of Manik Urai who go to the polls to pick their state assemblyman on July 14, are not in a dire need for a highly qualified candidate says PAS.

PAS Kelantan election director, Abdul Fattah Harun said unlike a Member of Parliament who shoulders much responsibility at federal level, an assemblyman's duties is more constituency-bound.

"The people of Manik Urai are also not mulling over it because a people's representative (Wakil rakyat) need not be a highly qualified person compared with an MP who represents his constituency at the federal level.

"Kelantan officers are mostly people oriented, even exco. As such, the people of Manik Urai can accept any candidate," he told reporters after a state assembly meeting here Wednesday.

PAS had nominated fish wholesaler Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, 50, who is also Kuala Krai PAS treasurer while Barisan Nasional (BN) chose Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat, 39, a graduate Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) graduate and former Kesedar project monitoring division manager for the July 14, by-election.

The by-election has been necessitated by the death of former state assemblyman, Ismail Yaakob of PAS, on May 22.
