I tend to agree. A formidable resource with all the media bells and whistle.
kudos to the SDP on the count that they provided great support... imagine TKL's vote count if they threw their weight behind TKL, a whole different ball game altogether, aye? :p:p:p

A minority President and a divided nation. A poor reflection on the Govt of the day and the PAP and it's failure to unite the people. I am sure it's a personal embarrassment to the old man and to Tony Tan and his family. Not sure if it was my imagination, but TT seemed frustrated and he was rude to May Wong on 2 occasions.
At least 64.81% voters didnt vote for TT !

biggest winner of the night...harry & son...also eddie, satpal n chan...

looks like pap core support now abt 35%...swing centre vote abt 25%...

TJS not to blame...this PE was pure dynamics n fluid...how TJS uses this new platform shall be interesting to c...

TCB now appears to hv considerable political capital n LHL personally calling him up after the recount supports this view...admit i got it wrong here...misread TCB's apparent lacklustre campaign...interesting to c what TCB does wif this political capital...

TKL got what he deserved...lost his deposit...ironically TKL finally got the 100K plus support that he originally wanted...

EP going to undergo changes...

actually may not be humiliating...personally think it all depends on how the pap govt n tt play out this game...for 2 straight terms nathan was an unelected ep while tt shall be an elected ep regardless of the size of his victory...

Agree about the humiliating 6 years. It will be worse than Nathan. Many people felt TT was going to win anyway. It was because of the narrow margin that people blamed TJS. But the fact that it turned out to be 35.2 and not 60.1 says alot.

I don't think Checkers reasoning is right. Chiam's decision to withdraw from the Anson By-Election on the eve was highly regarded and certainly not regarded as flip flop. It showed political acumen and unity. The left base would certainly not gone to TT. He was right about it being split between TKL and TCB but that would have given tine necessary margin to cross the 0.34% divide.

The argument that it is not TJS's duty to help TCB win the election. That is quite a simplistic argument. If Chiam had the same reasoning and entered the Anson fray we certainly not got that historic win. Great men make sacrifices. The average man will always fight for his share of the pie. The average man will also tell you that it is not his job to help his opponents. For the average man, unity is a motherhood word. They will not have the ability to see even when it's hits them in the face.

Checkers analysis does help in one significant way - it provides a crutch for those who cannot accept their part in this fiasco. We stuffed up but we can't seem to get over it. So close and yet so far. 30 years ago we got our act together, yesterday was a minor aberration. The journey continues.

Many thanks for the re-post.Checker's analysis is insightful and refutes many of the arguments put forth by those who vilify TJS as a clog in some nefarious PAP plot to split TCB's votes. In particular, he points out how the dynamics is likely to play out, had TJS decided, hypothetically, to withdraw his candidacy and throw his support behind TCB. The so-called left base would be disfranchised by the absence of a non ex-PAP candidate and while it is uncertain how the votes would be split between TCB and TKL, there is no doubt TJS' credibility would be destroyed by such a flip-flop.

Some thoughts:

1. The upside is that we now know roughly the "core pappy support" in SG. This could help in future GEs, as potential opposition candidates with good credentials may realise that they stand a good chance to capture a big portion of 65%.

2. TCB's results shows that if you are a kind and decent person even though you may have associated with some strange chaps, you will get rewarded, even though not the ultimate reward, but enough to feel proud.

3. The key for TJS is what he does next. He still has a political future if he does the right things.

4. My personal impression of TKL has improved, still an egoistic bumbler, but much more straightforward and principled than originally thought. Sadly, everytime I see our new president on tv, I have the need to turn the channel.

I thought about that - TCB political capital. He will be too old to make any further contribution of a meaningful sort. It's all lost to the wind. I hope Joshua picks it up.

TT from what I heard, he does not have a nice temperament.
Is that why he had "asked Singaporeans to put their trust in his background, his experience and his steady temperament. "

The emphasis on "temperament" in his tagline was already rising question marks.

The new president needs to brush up his mandarin faster. It is a mockery to be hearing him speaking in mandarin. OMG!

Can you please let me have some fun before Sunday ends. Tomorrow I will be writing about why TKL caused TT to be elected. Next week will be devoted to why spoiling the vote led to TT ascendency. The week after is a bit of a mystery as no more scapegoat to slaughter.

They were chandlers of the British Empire. Mandarin is also not our mother Tongue. Sometimes I wonder if we all got fooled.
