How hard to get rid of Singaporean Accent & Singlish?

Thanks for providing me some entertainment this evening.

Quoting Times University ranking shows how *little* you know about university rankings you retarded troll... Nobody in a fucking right mind would quote Times University ranking (save NUS who are desperately trying to promote themselves). Why? Cause unlike the reference that I used which rank institutions based on quantity and quality of publications and the quality of their faculty, Times University ranking uses shit criteria like "proportion of foreign students" (which we score excellently no doubt) and "faculty to student ratio"... etc. Now, what da fuck does this criteria have to do with research and education? Obviously that's why NUS scores 30ish in such dubious ranking and 70-100+ish on real rankings.

Oh dear, my foot is getting tired since I am stepping on your head all the time.

Many top universities in the world and employers quote Times rankings as well. Most employers don't give a shit what a China university ranks your university in their ARWUUUUU ranking or whatever shit, they care about general reputation and rankings and Times does provide that.

70th place in China's ARWWWUUU list is an excellent ranking for any university. But since you don't have any university education we can understand why you are so jealous.

Don't use vulgarities such as "FXXX" you damaged airhead. Go pull your ear and face the wall. Dont move until I give you permission to.

Oh and don't forget the stingrays and the tasmanian devil that will tear your eyes out and the dingoes that will steal your baby! CRIKEY!

Guys, stop feeding the trolls, its not worth the effort.

Ok, I rest my case. The troll is obviously a fine brainwashed product of this country's education. I'm afraid the condition is terminal.

Obviously you have shot yourself in the foot. You already admitted that only UK accepts Singapore as an English-speaking country. Well... I guess if our former colonial masters won't acknowledge us that it's really sad.

The fact that Singapore students have to call schools, give O-Level results to American universities, is already a bloody indication that the Americans don't think of Singaporeans as native English speakers by default.

You have just admitted that despite the supposedly high English proficiency in this country, most Western nations DO NOT think of Singapore as an English speaking nation, and often Singaporeans have to take some action to get recognized as being English first-language speakers.

Haha the UK is the colonial master of America, NZ, Australia and every countries that speaks english today as well. I hope you at least realise that.

Anyone who has ead my previous post and live on earth will know that most english speaking nations accept singaporean qualfications without questions of your english proficiency for immigration and university studies, only a few don't.

almost everyone takes the IELTS test for australia immigration anyway, be it from america, belize or singapore. and most singaporeans get the max 25 points for the test anyway.

seriously how does it feel having my foot on your head all the time?

Ha ha yes, what internet plan are you using in Australia? 120 gb CAPPED internet at 5mbps for 80 SGD? ha ha ha. What a joke. Oh yes remember to observe your off peak and on peak usage. In Singapore, 80 SGD can get 100mbps unlimited broadband. Yes you should be thankful you can even use the internet.

Denial is a real bitch isn't it?

Australia's internet speed is a disgrace, but still, we can get free international satellite TV and now internet TV. So, I am enjoying my lifestyle here.

But I understand that Singapore censor the internet more than Australia, so it is not so fun surfing the web there.

Singapore does not censor the internet except for a few symbolic sites. Internet tv? there must be a few singaporean internet tv sites these days.

but at least you face the facts and admit that technology, infrastructure, engineering, IT, efficiency and science etc in Australia are all 50 years behind Singapore. Good for you.

stick to boasting about australia's "more relaxed lifestyle". we all know australia is a farming country that has origins as a settlement for british convicts in the past.

Re: Singaporean Accent & Singlish

One of the saddest things that I have seen is the older children within a migrating family having difficulty picking up the accent. Their younger siblings are totally assimilated, have wider range of school mates while the elder ones struggle. They tend to gravitate towards their Asian classmates. Its not so bad if all the siblings are on the same plane. I have even seen the parents tend to favour the younger kids without realising it. The reality of life.

I have observed such a situation, more so when an older sibling arrived after age 18, while his/her siblings arrived under age 12. Challenging, but possible for the older sibling to assimilate. Fortunately, as our children were all born here, we do not face such a challenge.

I came to Toronto after graduation from university, but my wife came here when she was 17 (and her older sibling has a different accent) and she has a European accent (others sometimes guessed that she is from Scandinavia, may be because she is very tall, golden hair and green eyes).

Our children and one of my friends are able to imitate the accent of various ethnic groups (me with some Singaporean accent, Pakistanis, blacks, etc.).

1. avoid hanging around with sinkies or malaysians.
2. listen more to native speakers.
3. hear a lot of songs and watch a lot of news.
4. practise and speak.
5. keep repeating 1 thru' 4.

some are more linguistically inclined while some are rigid and less adaptive. there's no magic bullet to this. everyone is different.

Hk had produced 1 Nobel prize, china & India a couple, Japan - 16, Australia - 10. Singapore - zero. Singapore must be at least 50 years behind these countries in terms of innovation, science, medicine, social science and technology, no?

The issue is not the ban but the current mechanism and failure to understand the meaning of spamming.

Clearly the ban in this case is not justified as he has a contrarian and unpopular view but a genuine view nevertheless. On the hand, we allow LTS to spam repeatedly on the same issue. Its not considered a spam because he writes free text on the same subject repeatedly just like the BOC chap. And it is called freedom of speech by the misguided.

You give a monkey a flower and then wonder why it is ripping the petals one by one.

My point exactly. Members are giving other members infractions simply because they don't agree with their arguments.

The ban should never have happened and is a gross misuse of the infraction utility.

However, I'm not about to play nanny. :p I provide the forum, the bandwidth and the tools. I'm not going to interfere with the interaction process.

Eh, so when we getting a new moderator or the old one back ? Things were more civil when scroobal was moderator. At least LTB seem to be in checked nowadays.

A number of (ex-)Singaporeans still have a looooong way to go before we can accept alternative points of views.

but the point still remains that he couldn't provide enough evidence to suggest the SG education is capable of producing top talents. else SG wouldn't be over flooded with FTs...

Obviously not, Spore education system does not produce all rounders and innovators, that's why there is no Nobel prize awarded.Shame shame.

The senator troll wasn't interested in a proper discussion but rather spamming the stuff we read on local papers and insisting he is correct.

Firstly, he fails to address several key points that others have brought up. For my case, he fails to acknowledge that strong possibility that Singaporeans do well in international Maths & Science at a young age is due to intense drilling/practice and greater exposure, and not because Singapore kids or the local education system is better. This is in fact a very Singaporean mentality, always thinking that "more is better", and is reflected in how people in this country conduct their lives. Young parents nowadays are obsessed with tuition and remedial, so kids nowadays literally cover the syllabus twice - in school and in tuition. For what??? If your kid needs to be taught twice to fully understand the content, I dun see how local education can be better. Also Singapore's favorite pastime of "overtime", bosses like their staff to work late into the night, and sometimes staff with nothing to do also stay behind because it is the "work culture". For what??? What's the point of having an employee who cannot finish his work on time? What's importance is the task accomplished per unit time, and the same can be said for education.

The troll also fails to acknowledge that most university rankings are pointless because they are basically a popularity contest, use irrelevant ranking criteria and do not accurate judge the institution's research capability. The only global ranking that assess research output is the reference that I have cited, although it is admittedly not perfect. NUS ranks 70-100ish for most field rankings, and it is considered as a so-so research university, not terribly great but not terribly bad either. However, NUS insists in promoting itself as a *world class* research university, so obvious we have to use strict standards here. Perhaps some don't agree with my strict standards, but hey I'm using the standards NUS claims itself to be.

Secondly, when the troll runs out of points to add, he diverts to irrelevant stuff like the military strength of the Aussies or their censorship... again another indication that this guy is just out to create trouble.
