Are Singapore taxi drivers “paraplegic”?

I went to Plaza Singapore (“PS”) to do lunch with some colleagues/friends this afternoon. After lunch, we queued for our respective taxis to get back to office.

Before I continue, I must declare I have absolutely no prejudices against taxi-drivers. They could be educated professionals “drop-outs” or they could be driving since day 1 making an honest living.

They may be pesky at times ~ always using the corner of their eyes, looking into their rear mirrors at me, talking too much and so on. However, I bear no grudges against people who are making an honest living as long as they do their job professionally. If they can’t, please find some other job and stop being a driver!

I categorically cannot understand why some of these Singapore taxi drivers suffer from “paraplegia”. At the PS taxi stand, there was a Caucasian lady with baby, a baby pram, and Cold Storage grocery bags. The taxi drove forward, the boot opened.

The “paraplegic” taxi driver happily sat in his driver compartment. The poor Caucasian lady had to (1) load the baby into the passenger compartment, (2) fold-up the baby pram, (3) loaded the groceries into the boot, (4) returned the Cold Storage Trolley at the designated trolley-hold and (5) finally boarded. In fact, I even went forward to help her load some of her stuff into the taxi’s boot.

Inside me, I was infuriated. I was about to confront this “paraplegic” driver and knock some cow-sense into his pea-size brain. Why can’t he come out of his taxi and assist the lady. Is he really a paraplegic driver? I seriously doubt it.

Not only it shows how unprofessional and unsympathetic these drivers are, it inconsiderately held up the queue of others as well – other passengers in the queue and other taxi drivers who are behind his taxi.

PS : Conversely, it all seems strange at Changi Airport taxi stand. You will find these taxi drivers ever ready to load your heaviest luggage. Is that what “airport surcharge” is for? I am sure it is not.

They don't carry your luggage at the airport either. Once I forgot and left it there the cab driver picked it up and threw it into the boot and drove off very fast out of the airport obviously pissed he had to carry my luggage and put into the boot.. I met a good driver too. Once he stopped outside my house and help my luggage cause mine was toppling over while I went to the gate of my house.

Good evening Jah.

Everytime I arrived back in Singapore, the taxi driver will automatically step out of their vehicle waiting for me to wheel my trolley of luggages to their taxi bay. Not a single time I have to load myself. Perhaps they reckon that I am a female passenger and hence they help me.

I am not really sure what these drivers learn when they take lessons for their taxi licence. I am pretty certain they are told to assist, though not mandatory. But increasingly, I am seeing lots of "paraplegic" taxi drivers who happily sit in their taxis. And mind you, these are not old and elderly drivers. The one at PS today was probably in his late 30s or early 40s.

Additionally, this is not the first time I witnessed this sort of "paraplegic" drivers. I have seen it at Ikea, Vivocity, Takashimaya, Suntec City, etc.

You go to an ang mo cunt try and take a taxi....see if the driver will help you....???

Taxi drivers are tired after long hours of driving. Yes some may be younger, have more energy and so can be more helpful...others are either older, more tired or lazy. So what? helping passengers with their luggage or groceries is not a job spec. Just something nice to have..if they can and are willing...

Talk so much....just so ready to nit pick on minor minor things...live and let live....get a life....!!!!

Invariably, you either get the helpful or nonchalant cabbie.

If you are waving 1 (not taxi rank) on a busy stretch, it may not be most "convenient".
Just last evening on my arrival at T2, with 2 big luggage + 2 medium hand carry, the cabbie just stood by with open boot lid.
And had the gall to tell me off for placing trolley couple of feet away from boot (look who's doing handy work).
But when I rounded up the fare, he was a "changed" man by helping me offloading my stuff. Money makes the mare run :p

you shouldn't have "tipped" him by rounding up the fare but yeah the drivers do judge by who their passengers are. If the passenger is male and young they probably won't help since he looks able bodied or if the passenger doesn't have much luggage to carry like just 1 suitcase for example. I suppose females or older males might get more help i don't know. I seen taxi drivers not helping when a maid was unloading the groceries for example or when this family was loading quite a number of suitcases into the taxi. I guess it also depends on the driver. You have a younger driver they tend to be nicer and will help, you get an older uncle type they probably won't and they have some attitude problems too. Anyway the problem is how some drivers make a real bloody fuss out of carrying the luggage like some of them literally will mind just to help out but in sg taxi drivers don't need to help passengers with the luggage but what is the matter if they do aid. What's the big deal anyway.

Anyway quan yifeng got into a spat with a taxi driver once. He didn't carry her luggage for her cos he doesn't need to. She got really offended. Got into an argument with him. Stole his car keys and locked herself inside his cab and i think possibly got physical with him.

Fup, why do you need to compare other countries? Do we need to be gracious only if other countries' drivers do the same? If so, let's compare an Asian country, Japan. They do.

Most taxi drivers in Singapore lack self-respect of their own profession. If they have a little more self-pride of the importance they serve for public transportation in Singapore, then they will become more professional. Helping a customer load some grocery bags would not kill him or break his back even if he is an elderly driver. Are you telling me the elderly driver doesn't even carry his own groceries if he goes marketing at supermarket?

The problem with the Singaporean mentality is "calculative". I am not paid for it, so I don't do it. For heaven's sake, if you work in the transportation service industry, it is all about service. Otherwise, do something else.

Having said that, I always round up the fare irrespective of whether I have things put in the boot or not. It is my way of showing appreciation to them.

Good evening both Yin and Jah.

I think the key word I spotted is in Jah's post ~ "attitude problem" ~ a problem we get whether the person is a driver, secretary, manager, etc. At least I know an employee can be "marked down" during performance evaluation about service standards, but a taxi driver?

good morning sister. every time except for one occasion when i arrive at changi, the cab driver would help load my luggage in the trunk and unload it upon arrival at destination. the exception had to do with a trunk that was filthy and partially filled with a spare container of fuel, tools and rags. the driver just opened the backseat door and i had to lift the luggage on the seat myself. nothing biggie to whine about as all i wanted was to get to destination without event so i could shit in peace and comfort. it's hit and miss in sg.

Fuck u lah, you stupid cunt. talk like you travel a lot. If you travel so much, have you taken a taxi in a western country? The cab driver will help you load your luggage, in fact, more then happy to do so. When I travel in North America, they load my luggage for me all the time. You know why? TIPS!!!!. Now ask yourself whether passengers here tip their taxi drivers or not? If the cab driver has zero expectation of receiving tips, they will not do shit for you. This also u cannot understand? Fucking clown.

Wow. An awesome christmas tree, Elder brother Eat.

Nice lighting in your office too. I hate those in mine as they have white fluorescent lights.
