A CANTEEN assistant who had been on life support after eating Rojak in a Geylang Serai market stall, died on Monday morning.
Madam Hamidah Samijo, 57, came down with severe food poisoning after a meal at the Rojak Geylang Serai stall last Friday.

She went into a coma, making her the worst hit among the more than 100 people who sought treatment at six major hospitals after eating at the stall. She died at 6.50 am at the Changi General Hospital on Monday.

Her body has been moved to the Singapore General Hospital for autopsy.

Her husband Omar Ali, who is in his 50s, was also admitted to CGH but he is recovering. Two other family members, Madam Siti Hamidah, a housewife in her 40s and her brother also fell ill after eating there.

In Madam Aminah's case, acute renal failure set in when the food poisoning infection entered her kidneys, sending her into a coma. She also had low blood pressure.

Of those who sought treatment in hospitals, 29 were admitted. Only three are known to have been discharged so far.

Rojak Geylang Serai, Stall No. 302, has been around for more than 20 years, and often has long queues snaking from it.

The Ministry of Health and the National Environment Agency jointly inspected the stall on Saturday and collected samples. MOH, which has received feedback from the hospitals and from stall patrons, said preliminary investigations showed the Rojak to be the suspected cause of the outbreak.

The stallholder and his assistant have been asked to go for screening at the Communicable Diseases Centre. The stallholder told authorities that his stall would be closed for the next two days

LAST Wednesday, Madam Siti Hamidah, a housewife in her 40s, was hit by diarrhoea after tucking into Indian rojak at a well-known stall in the Geylang Serai Market.
The next day, unknown to her, her brother also fell ill after eating there.

And a day later, their sister ate there too and is now in a coma, making her the worst hit among the more than 100 people who sought treatment at six major hospitals after a meal at the Rojak Geylang Serai stall.

It is unknown how many others may have gone to general practitioners, polyclinics or private hospitals.

Canteen assistant Aminah Samijo, 57, remains on life support at Changi General Hospital (CGH). Her unemployed husband Omar Ali, who is in his 50s, was also admitted to CGH, but is on the mend.

The extended family found out the common thread in their diet - that they had all patronised the stall - only when Madam Aminah was hospitalised.

Madam Siti said of her sister, the second eldest of 14 siblings: 'The doctor says it is very bad. She has always been in good health before this.'

When The Straits Times went to the hospital, Madam Siti was keeping vigil with more than 20 relatives.

Among them was Madam Aminah's son Salleh, a 23-year-old sales assistant. He said his parents ate at the stall every weekend and never had problems before.

He added that his parents had eaten at the stall at about 4pm on Friday. His mother still seemed fine almost three hours later, when he spoke to her before he went out.

But both she and his father were taken ill shortly after, hit with stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhoea. His mother collapsed while in the toilet, and later lapsed into a coma from which she has not woken up.

Ah neh Rojak, they use special ingredients and Tampons for the sauce. U heard that be4?

I've heard about this one.

Not tampons but soiled sanitary pads. Not Indian rojak but satay sauce.

It's got something to do with Malay black magic so it's not about the "flavour".

They eat with their right hand..clean their bums with their left! that is why they don;t shake hands..!!

They might use different hands for different bodily functions but I doubt they only use one hand to prepare food.

Another thing that I look out for are rings that these 'chefs' wear. It caused the last round of mass food poisoning at the Jalan Kayu prata shop
