Their TAURUS model85 is only a five shot revolver, waste 1 bullet in the sky means only 4 left to use on riot if they charge forward. Anyway what use are 5 bullets against a 400 crowd/riot. Even with a fast reload, it would still be a futile exercise.

The fact that 2 police cars were overturned/ burnt indicates that the policemen from the initial 5 cars that arrived did not stand their ground and probably ran away for dear life- self preservation instinct.

The police first arrivals were not even dressedin riot body armour to handle the situation.

It was the arrival of FOREIGN TALENT Gurkhas contigent that quelled the RIOT.

TEAR-GAS, water cannons are the tools to use against riots.

You should deploy non-lethal weapons for riots.

Where are the rubber bullets and taser guns? What's the point of having live ammo, then waiting for your humji superiors to give further instructions?

I sincerely and honestly believe that our security forces did the right thing. They exercised great restraint and they did not use any firearms or any unnecessary force to provoke more rioting and more accidents.

The mob was almost uncontrollable and the rioters were running amok and beserk. If firearms were used and if some of the rioters were shot dead, things would be worse. Our security forces did the right thing and they should be applauded for keeping the situation under control.

In fact , some of the Indians themselves were trying to stop their fellow men from causing more damages and destruction. They themselves were trying to stop their own people from causing more harm and more rioting. These good Samaritans should be applauded for their courage to stop their own people from causing more damages.

At the end of the day, Singaporeans should learn from this Little India's Riot and I hope our enlightened Government will do something NOW to stop future problems and riots. There must be a total reappraisal of the situation and the problems associated with massive influx of foreign workers should be quickly and effectively addressed before things get worse.

I am sure our Government will do the necessary to prevent further such incidents and to safeguard the interests of Singaporeans. This is an event waiting to happen .I have driven in that area before and many of our forummers have voiced our concern, It is no surprise that the riot had happened - all the conditions were there .All it needed was an excuse to explode in all its ugly gory.

Hope we all learn from this incident.

i think they lack the real time experience of handling such a mob. first time most officers are facing such a scenario. at least they don't have to resort to tear gas or water pumps in order to control the crowd. if the situation exacerbated to that, then we'll be in much deeper trouble. but in any regards, kudos to them for keeping it under control. being on the frontline isn't all that easy

In these kind of close quarter situations, 10 police vs 400 mob, where got chance to even hope to discharge 100 rounds? After the first shot killing another INDIAN would have enraged the unruly mob into a killing frenzy.
The mob would have descended on the police and grabbed their handguns, shoot and kill all 10 policemen and probably mutilate their dead bodies and burn them with their cars .

At least those 10 policemen had enough IQ to run away instead of becoming dead heroes, how much compensation would their immediate families be getting from the stingy PAP for their self sacrifice???

according info from a mata reservist, every mata chia boot/trunk contain riot gear and body armour plus helmet. a ten person mata in riot gear and formation shd be able to stand their ground against rioters till reinforcement arrive.

This generation of police have never witness any riot . The 1st arrivals was not equipped to handle the riot and it would have been more embarrassing if the rioters have snatch their weapons. Evidently the riot squad is more suited to handle the situatin than the 1st few police arrivals. How can anyone know how the rioters will behave, are their drunk and lost all the senses ? Still the police should have stood their ground and not ran away.
